What is biodynamic craniosacral therapy?

BCST is many people’s “surprise” favorite form of bodywork. It is a light-touch technique that works with all the tissues and bones of the body, the cerebrospinal fluid, and our fundamental ordering principle, which in BCST is known as the Breath of Life. It is both a physiologically and an energetically based system. Over time, its effects can be vast and literally life-changing.

How does it work?

The craniosacral therapy that William Sutherland, D.O., “discovered” over one hundred years ago has, over the course of time, moved from a healing modality that was mainly physiologically based to one that, while paying great attention to our body physiology, is grounded in the intelligence of the Breath of Life.

The Breath of Life (universal intelligence) promotes the flow of natural healing. Physical and emotional stress can block that natural flow. Cranial work helps it to move again.

Physiology

Healing in BCST takes place at a number of levels. The level most familiar to us is the physiological. At this level, the practitioner carefully listens to and acknowledges the body’s physiological messages from the pull of a misplaced vertebra or a strained muscle to the ebbs and flows of cerebrospinal fluid and helps the tissue adjust to a more optimal level of functioning. Many clients come in with neck or back pain that only partially responds to massage. They usually find that by the end of a cranial session their pain has either vanished completely and does not recur or is greatly alleviated.

Acknowledgment

Another level at which BCST works is the level of acknowledgment. The process of being heard, acknowledged, and appreciated is very powerful, and the physical body, like the emotional body, responds to it. Often, all that is needed to remove a block is careful, compassionate attention and acknowledgment. Blocks are much like two-year-old children who, once acknowledged, cease their tantrums and transform. This acknowledgment may take place non-verbally, or I may ask you what you are feeling in your body. Your own increasing awareness of what is taking place in your body helps it to begin to heal itself.

The Dynamic Stillness

The deepest level of healing is that of dynamic stillness. In stillness, the inherent potency of the Breath of Life permeates you, and healing takes place. Pains cease or diminish, fear subsides, and the body reorders. No agenda is necessary, for the Breath of Life knows where to go. As the Breath of Life flows through you, you will feel an incredible sense of well-being and peace.

Emotional issues

BCST is a wonderful and gentle way to work with emotional trauma, anxiety, stress, and depression. Traumatic states are often overwhelming. In BCST work, trauma is processed at a pace the body can handle, which helps you move gradually toward deeper levels of harmony and attunement. Furthermore, through cranial work, you will naturally become more and more resourced, grounded, and integrated, further facilitating the processing of trauma and/or the achievement of calmer and more joyful states of being.

Physical problems

This work can be used to deal with all sorts of physical ailments, including migraines, lower back pain, menstrual cramps, TMJ, irritable bowel syndrome, pulled muscles, foot and leg pain, sleep problems, and pain resulting from automobile accidents.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is the Mother of all natural health care systems, drawing upon 5,000 years of observation of human existence.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term which means the knowledge (Veda) of life (Ayur). Even a basic understanding of this profound system of health gives the ability to detect imbalances at a subtle level greatly reducing the chance of developing disease. These treatments help restore the body’s natural balance, calm the mind and re-establish our original state of harmony.

Abhyanga

warm oil full body massage

A full body massage with warm oil performed by one or two technicians. Abhyanga stimulates the lymphatic system and rejuvenates the skin. It is a powerful way of loosening toxins and relaxing the mind and body.

Shirodhara

very relaxing and balancing

The playing of a continuous stream of liquid on the forehead, usually warm sesame oil. It is a simple but profound technique that relaxes the body, clears the mind and settles the nervous system. The combination of Abhyanga and Shirodhara is a classic Ayurvedic treatment.

Marma Chikitsa

energetic balancer

Marma means secret, hidden, vital. Marma points are a link between consciousness and matter. By gently stimulating certain points of the body, it is possible to rebalance the energy and remove blocks from the Nadis which are subtle channels that carry the flow life energy called prana.

Padaghata

deep tissue emotional releaser

A strong in-depth full body massage giving special attention to the back, abdomen and neck areas to release tight muscles and deep seated tensions/emotions.

Health is the greatest possession. Contentment is the greatest treasure. Confidence is the greatest friend.

I received Ayurvedic training in the heart of Schwartzwald, at the AOL
Ayurvedic clinic along with an in depth study of meditation and yogic breathing techniques.

I have been trained in Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapies, Marma technique, Abyangha and Shirodhara and over the years developed my own healing modality called Deep Tissue Emotional Release. Since 2000 I have traveled throughout Europe and India for private therapies, giving talks, organising retreats and workshops.

In India I became acquainted with osteopathy and cranial work and used it intuitively until 2010 when I decided to officially train in the Sutherland-Sills method of Craniosacral Therapy.

I combine all these different techniques and approaches appropriately to meet the clients needs and the silence within to allow healing to happen.

For me working with people’s bodies is spiritual practice, be it Ayurvedic therapies, Craniosacral Biodynamics or a unique combination that I developed over the years.
